Currently, we are staying small and focusing on building our model. Guild membership requires an invitation from a Guild member or Co-Founder to join.
Production Threshold: Guild members produce or are responsible for a minimum production threshold of 60 tons of wine grapes OR a winery that produces a minimum of 3,000 cases of wine over a three-year period.
Technical Leaders: Membership is intended for decision-makers at the ownership, winemaking or viticulturist level:
To prevent conflicts of interest between full-time stakeholders and suppliers.
It's lonely at the top and climate change has made decision making even harder as each year seems to present a new and unique challenge. Technical leaders need a safe space to be be vulnerable and brainstorm solutions with other leaders experiencing similar challenges without fear of judgement.
The main Guild activity is the SPEAR democratic applied research program. Participants use the scientific method to evaluate and apply solutions to their operations.
No. Guild research is applied research. It evaluates any type of science, technology, cultural traditions and for lack of a better term, magic, in a scientific manner to understand an area and eliminate business pain. Guild research tends to be more systems-focused as solutions have to work for that particular vineyard or winery, with the understanding that what works for one winery may not work for another.
Absolutely. University-grade and government-sponsored research such as USDA or Conservation Districts are the first places that we check when looking to design our experiments. We also recognize that discoveries happen not only in labs, but also on the front lines, during operations, and from applying indigenous practices. Our goal is to learn by doing, observing, measuring, and sharing.
Absolutely. Suppliers and consultants are appreciated as subject matter experts. They deliver products, services, and expertise that the wine industry could not do without. When the Guild desires assistance with a specific product or service, this group will be called upon to assist with that need.
Yes, on the condition that they are sponsored/mentored by another Guild member. This is a professional leadership forum where leaders are learning from other leaders. We understand that wine industry titles and responsibilities can vary significantly from the small family winery to the large corporate winery and recognize that nobody is an expert at everything.
Yes, Guild membership follows the person (email), not the winery. On the condition that you do not leave the grape growing or wine production industry, you are welcome to stay. Of course, taking a job as a supplier would be outside the conditions of being a Guild member. If that happens, kindly let us know and we can direct you to another method of participation.
Yes. Consulting winemakers, viticulturists and vineyard managers that oversee commercial vineyard and winery operations help incubate new wine businesses and are welcome. Production thresholds apply.
